Handel wrote more than fifty operas between 1704 and 1745, after which he abandoned the genre and concentrated on oratorios. From his very first opera production, Almira, in Hamburg in 1705, the composer concentrated on maximising the dramatic possibilities of the genre, and he moved on to produce an unceasing stream of works that were to become landmarks of musical history. Proof of this can be heard in this year’s concert by the Academia 1750, the Torroella Festival Period Orchestra – a selection of arias and duets from several of the composer’s operas. The orchestra will be conducted by Paul Goodwin, one of the greatest present-day specialists in Handel’s music, with Núria Rial and Marta Infante as vocal soloists.
The vocal works in the concert will be interspersed with orchestral movements from a suite from Telemann’s Tafelmusik. Telemann was a contemporary of Handel who enjoyed a great reputation as an established musical authority in 18th century Hamburg.
Torroella de Montgrí Festival production.
