Eduardo Rincón: *The Ninth Day of Creation / Ludwig van Beethoven: Concerto for violin and orchestra, Op. 61 / Robert Schumann: Symphony no. 3, Op. 97, “Rhenish”
This evening’s concert begins with a contemporary composition and continues with two great works from the German romantic period. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, Op. 61, was first performed in 1806 and was little appreciated during the composer’s lifetime. It wasn’t until 1844 that Joseph Joachim, 13 years of age at the time, revived the work, accompanied by an orchestra conducted by Felix Mendelssohn, and the concerto began to be considered one of the most important works composed for the instrument. The first performance of Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony in 1851 could not have been more different, as the work soon became the most popular of the four symphonies composed by one of German romanticism’s greatest exponents.
In this concert the Latvian conductor, Alexis Soriano, will direct one of Hungary’s greatest orchestras, with the violinist Sergey Krilov as soloist in the Beethoven concerto. The talent of both artists has been officially recognised by Valery Gergiev.
The program will begin with Eduardo Rincón’s Ninth Day of Creation, inspired by the aesthetic reaction of the composer to the mural paintings of Jesús Mateo in the church of Saint John the Baptist, Alarcón (Cuenca province).
