Boris Berezovsky, piano
Sergey Rachmaninov: Preludes, Op. 23, nos. 2, 5, 6 and 7 / Preludes, Op. 32, nos. 1, 3, 5 and 13 / Nikolay Medtner: 6 Fairy Tales, Op. 51 / Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures from an Exhibition
Boris Berezovsky, one of the greatest pianists active today, will give his first concert in Catalonia with a programme that includes Mussorgsky’s famous Pictures from an Exhibition, composed as a sincere tribute on the death of the composer’s friend, the architect Victor Hartmann. The music owes its inspiration to the aesthetic impact of an exhibition of Hartmann’s drawings and models, and the composer explores a multitude of technical resources and experiments in sound, resulting in one of the most successful works in Russian piano repertoire, notwithstanding the popularity of Ravel’s orchestration of 1922.
In this concert, Mussorgsky’s masterpiece will be accompanied by eight Preludes by the Russian post-romantic composer Rachmaninov. We will also discover another arch-enemy of the new developments in music of the time – Nikolay Medtner (1879-1951), whose works were greatly influenced by the expressive qualities present in Schumann and Brahms.
