Giovanni Ferrandini: Sinfonia in B flat major / Il Pianto di Maria (attributed to G.F.Handel) / Manuel Pla: Concerto for traverso in B flat Major IV/2 / Nicola Antonio Porpora: Salve Regina in G Major for voice and instruments
Even today, at the beginning of the 21st century, musicians such as Giovanni Battista Ferrandini (1710-1791), Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) or Manuel Pla (d. 1766) raise more questions than answers. Questions which may well have arisen from a somewhat German-centred view of musical history which tends to omit certain aspects of the historical background and the tastes prevalent at the time.
Even today, the music of these composers continues to fascinate us, whether on account of the influence they had on Mozart and the Germanic tradition (Ferrandini), of having been a teacher of the mythical Farinelli (Porpora), or of being a member of the most famous family of composer-instrumentalists of the 18th century (Manuel Pla). This concert by the Acadèmia 1750, with the renowned Navarrese soprano María Bayo, will attempt to answer some of the questions with a programme centred on the imposing Pianto de Maria which for years was attributed to George Frideric Handel.
A performance in modern times with period instruments of the concerto by Pla will complete the programme of what will be an original and interesting concert.
