La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc (1928) was the first film by the Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer (1889-1968) to be recognised as a world classic. Other famous films by this director are Dies Irae, Ordet and Gertrud. The script was written by Michael Champion and the director himself, based on original transcriptions of Joan of Arc’s trial, and critics have referred to the film as a “symphony of close-ups”.
The trial of Joan of Arc (1413-1431), canonised in 1920, was chosen by the Lutheran director as the theme of a markedly Catholic film noted for the acting of Renée Falconetti in the rôle of Joan. Dreyer uses the story to make a study of human passion and of the characters’ attitude in the face of pain.
There are clear influences of realism, but also of expressionism, and this striking film will be shown with the soundtrack composed by the Lithuanian composer Bronius Kutavicius. The setting of the Gothic church of Saint Genís will be a key element in an unforgettable artistic experience.
